First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation funds the resurgence and vitality of Indigenous languages, arts and cultural heritage.
First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation is an Indigenous-led registered charitable organization that provides funding to support the revitalization of the languages, arts, and cultural heritage of B.C. First Nations. We partner with donors and allies who are committed to reconciliation and taking meaningful action through their contributions.
Our goal is to secure stable, long-term funds that support intergenerational cultural revitalization of B.C. First Nations communities. British Columbia is home to 204 First Nations, 36 Indigenous languages, and 90+ dialects. Each Nation expresses its unique worldview through language, art, and cultural practices that are carefully passed between generations.
Decades of colonial and genocidal policies, including the residential school system, severely disrupted these systems of knowledge transmission. As Elders and Knowledge Holders age, this living knowledge is at critical risk. Yet less than 1% of philanthropic funding reaches Indigenous‑led organizations. Their revitalization, however, is closely linked to improved health, social, environmental, and economic outcomes for Indigenous communities.
Supporting this work affirms the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples, in alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and contributes to meaningful reconciliation and healing. Contributions directly fund community-led initiatives, including:
Language Revitalization: Supports the creation of fluent speakers through immersion, language documentation, accessible learning resources, and long‑term planning. Indigenous languages are essential to identity, culture, and connection to land. When languages remain strong, communities experience improved health, knowledge transmission, and economic vitality.
Arts Revitalization: Supports creative expression across generations, including ceremonial, oral, visual, performance, music, literary, media, and applied arts such as carving, weaving and other textiles. Passed down through stories, mentorship, ceremony, and hands‑on practice, Indigenous arts connect communities to their past while shaping their future.
Cultural Heritage Revitalization: Supports the protection and renewal of the places, practices, and infrastructure that sustain Indigenous cultures. This includes heritage buildings and sites, cultural landscapes and trails, archives, and gathering spaces that safeguard repatriated items, strengthen connections to land and community, and foster learning and sharing.
The Foundation supports grant‑making through its partnership with the First Peoples’ Cultural Council (FPCC), an Indigenous-led B.C. Crown corporation who delivers the programs, tools, and resources to B.C. First Nations communities and individuals.
