Orchestra London was originally founded in 1937 as the London Civic Symphony Orchestra. At that time, the orchestra was comprised of local businesspeople, teachers, homemakers and students. Under the direction of violinist Bruce Sharpe, the orchestra performed many contemporary Canadian works by composers such as Barbara Pentland, Gerald Bales and Wayne Barlow.
After temporarily disbanding during World War II, the orchestra was re-formed in 1950. At that time, the orchestra hired Martin Boundy, its first professional conductor, who remained on the podium until 1969.
In 1957, the orchestra was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization. The orchestra became a fully professional organization with the hiring of 30 full-time musicians in 1975.
