Did you read the instructions for a medical prescription today, or follow baking directions, or write an email? Can you imagine not being able to read or write well enough to do the things you do everyday?
The Oakville Literacy Council is a non-profit, volunteer group dedicated to helping local adults improve their literacy skills. It provides free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring for English-speaking adults, who are experiencing difficulty with everyday reading, writing, or math skills. We are based in Oakville, Ontario, west of Toronto.
According to a 2005 study, called the International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey, 48% of adult Canadians, age 16 and over – representing 12 million people – have low literacy. Literacy difficulties are the root cause of many of the other social, economic, and health challenges people face every day.

Oakville Literacy Council transforms the lives of adults in our community through improved reading, writing, math and computer skills,

$25 helps off-set the workbook materials for one student

$50 covers the cost of screening and orientation for one volunteer tutor

$75 pays for a customized lesson plan geared to a student's personal goals

$100 will help us with our outreach programs targeting community agencies and workplaces to properly seek out those who need us.
