The Kyoto Twist connects the use of solar cooker technology to efforts to reduce poverty, disease, deforestation, soil erosion, and greenhouse gas emissions from cooking fires.  
Families using solar cookers can redirect their resources from gathering and purchasing cooking fuel to their childrens' educational, medical, and nutritional needs.
Many people, especially women and children, are subject to choking smoke in their homes from cooking fires which causes lung and eye diseases and puts children at risk from burns.
Forests and fruit trees are at risk of being cut down to use as fuelwood or burned to make charcoal to cook with.  When the land is unprotected by trees, soil is eroded by the rains destroying farmland.
When a family uses a solar cooker for half their meals, it is estimated that three tonnes of greenhouse gases per year are not released into the environment.
