OUR MISSION
EYA empowers youth from equity-denied communities to become environmental stewards.
ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH ALLIANCE
Founded in 1989, EYA provides free land-based education and paid employment training programs that support youth to develop the skills and confidence to become environmental stewards. Our programs centre on three themes - native plant horticulture, ecological restoration, and plant medicine. All programs integrate Indigenous teachings and land stewardship protocols through visits from Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers. EYA programs are led by youth who identify as Indigenous, Black, and/or People of Colour.
OUR PROGRAMS
EYA programs take place in Strathcona Community Gardens - a 1.4 hectare community-run green space in the Downtown Eastside with a plant nursery, greenhouse, rewilding areas, medicine and teaching gardens, and solar-powered eco-classroom. We reach 600+ children youth annually through a series of programs that create a pathway to leadership for marginalized youth:
- Wild Minds - a school program introducing elementary students to ecology concepts
- Nature Stewards - a multi-week program engaging youth to lead conservation projects
- Peer Mentors - older youth alumni help lead programs to gain facilitation experience
- Roots & Shoots - paid land-based employment training programs and work placements
- Youth Advisory Council - youth provide input and help design EYA programs
