Mission Statement
For over 35 years, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre has been passionately committed to the training and education of young dancers in the art of contemporary dance. We dedicate ourselves to investing in the artistic potential of youth for the development of the art form. Specifically:
- The School serves the art form of contemporary dance by providing well-trained and educated dance artists to further developments in the field.
- The School supports the professional development of faculty and guest artists so that they may further their artistry and provide excellent and relevant instruction to students.
- The School serves as advocates for dance and for education in the arts within the dance community and to the public-at-large.
Philosophically, training emphasizes the whole dancer — body, mind, and spirit — since excellent movement training engages the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our humanity. The School of Toronto Dance Theatre affirms its commitment to the education of all aspects of an individual through its strong and varied curriculum and through the provision of excellent role models in its faculty and guest artists.
Through its dedication to excellence in the art form, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre is at the forefront of training in contemporary dance in Canada.
Description
The School of Toronto Dance Theatre was established in 1968 by the founders of Toronto Dance Theatre: Patricia Beatty, David Earle, and Peter Randazzo. Under the artistic direction of Patricia Fraser since 1993, the School is devoted to providing a broad spectrum of movement classes for the serious dance artist and for the community. It is comprised of four divisions: the full-time, three-year Professional Training Program (PTP), providing training to students intent on a career in modern dance; the Summer School, an intensive month-long program for serious students and young professionals; the General School, a program of modern dance classes for the recreational dancer; and the Young Dancers' Program, for youth from ages 3 to 16.
The School maintains its affiliation with Toronto Dance Theatre, currently under the artistic direction of Christopher House.
