The Fresh Outlook Foundation (FOF) inspires community conversations for sustainable change.
FOF's acclaimed program, Climate Action Ripple Effect (CARE), is a collaborative community model of student and community education and engagement that supports local and global climate action goals with real-world solutions.
This pioneering approach has proven successes and impacts in both School District 22 (Vernon) and School District 23 (Central Okanagan). Numbers of participants have doubled every year since CARE's launch in 2022. In 2026 alone, almost 1,800 teachers, students, and mentors co-created 390 projects that support municipal climate plans/goals and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
CARE matches small students teams from grades 5-12 with community mentors from all sectors. They collaborate during the spring semester to create projects that propose solutions to local climate challenges in nature and biodiversity, agriculture and food, energy and buildings, waste reduction, eco-friendly transportation, and human health and culture.
Student learning and innovation are celebrated at CARE Expos in May, where CARE Community Impact Awards are given to teams with innovative projects that support real and lasting change.
CARE is a community climate action program using CARE as the catalyst for multi-sector, intergenerational, and cross-cultural communication and collaboration. Each CARE community involves the school district, local government, higher education, climate professionals and advocates, environment/climate nonprofit organizations, and climate-friendly businesses.
This collaborative approach:
- Teaches students the value of community engagement and collaboration in their personal, educational, and vocational lives
- Involves people from all sectors, ages, cultures, faiths, abilities, and genders, thereby ensuring a that mix of diverse experiences, insights, ideas, passions, connections, and areas of influence are reflected in problem-solving activities
- Strengthens relationships and provides opportunities for knowledge sharing and collective action among educators, government elected officials and staff, climate professionals and advocates, and local businesses
- Enables and encourages broad-based communication and collaboration that builds community awareness, fosters behaviour change, and optimizes capacity for community climate action over time
