Eastern Shore Heritage Preservation Fund
The Lake Charlotte Area Heritage Society’s "Eastern Shore Heritage Preservation Fund" was established in 2009 with the goal of creating an Endowment Fund that will provide us with a stable annual income to be used toward heritage preservation activities carried out by the Eastern Shore Archives. The Eastern Shore Heritage Preservation Fund is held in trust by the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia. The Society is still working towards its target of $1 million.
The interest earned from our Endowment Fund helps us to:
- carry our fieldwork such as travelling with scanners and recording equipment to elders in our community and those who once lived in our community, to record their stories of life on the Eastern Shore before 1950. These oral histories are made available to researchers who come to our archives, but also are used in the immersive exhibits at Memory Lane Heritage Village.
- to travel to members in our community in order to scan and document photographs, returning the originals to the owners and creating archival quality copies to be held by the archives and making a secondary copy for the family, thus preserving the knowledge and documentary history of our area.
- to maintain the Eastern Shore Archives, a volunteer operated institutional archives responsible for preserving the history of the Eastern Shore from Lawrencetown to Ecum Secum. Infrastructure requires money to maintain it in good working order, including a state of the art Inergen fire suppression system.
- to carry out research projects that are not easy to fund, such as our recent Eastern Shore Lobster Buoy documentation project.
- to hire project archivists to assist with the cataloging and housing of archival papers and entering them into the online database under MemoryNS.
