Mission Statement

The Taylor-Birks Foundation helps families of intellectually disabled children who are in need on the Island of Montreal. The Foundation supports projects and activities that lie outside the mandate of the public system but that are crucial to the successful raising of an intellectually disabled child. Its support targets families that need help to maintain healthy family units while raising all siblings to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Description

Taylor-Birks was founded by parents of intellectually disabled children in 1975. Like a hospital foundation, Taylor-Birks has been working in partnership with the West Montreal Readaptation Centre, the latter being the public agency responsible for serving persons with intellectual disabilities in West Montreal.

The Foundation lead a capital campaign to build a state of the art respite care facility, located in Beaconsfield, Quebec. This 1 million dollar project provides a regular respite service to children with severe behavioral problems, and who are currently excluded from services that are provided to children with an intellectual disability in the area.
Lack of respite has caused many families to experience serious difficulties, often leading to parent break-up or emergency child placement in alternative living arrangements. Specialized equipment is now needed to complete the Eléanor Côté Respite Home.
