Mission: The North Point Douglas Women's Centre exists to create opportunities for women to develop their potential and engage fully as citizens of their community.
Vision: A safe, healthy, vibrant community for women and families in which all forms of violence against women are addressed by engaging the community in prevention and remediation strategies.
North Point Douglas Women's Centre is a community based centre in one of Canada's poorest urban areas. We provide a drop-in six days a week, responding to basic needs (safety, food security, phone, donations, computers, information, counseling), and seek to support and empower women and their children as they address issues in their lives. During limited hours some resources are offered to community men. Programming responds to needs identified by the community with special foci on health and safety. Health programming includes information and programs encouraging healthy food, increased physical activity and building strong relationships within families and between neighbours. Safety work includes youth outreach, crime reduction planning, community based activities for children and youth (community gardening, odd jobs for youth, walking school bus) and activities that build community engagement (Austin Street Festival, Dreamcatchers--an adaptation of Citizens on Patrol Program).
