The CanAsian Dance Festival fosters and promotes diverse expressions of Asian aesthetics through dance in Canada. Through a biennial festival and annual artistic and professional development activities the CanAsian Dance Festival:
? commissions the creation of original Canadian dance and music by outstanding choreographers and composers;
? presents traditional dance art forms as well as new dance that integrates contemporary and traditional principles;
? produces exceptional professional development activities for dance artists through its workshops, master classes, panel discussions and forums;
? aims to inform the larger dance community and the general public of the diversity of dance artistry in Canadian society through its public performances, workshops, classes and forums. It celebrates that diversity and promotes greater acceptance and understanding within society.
Artistic Mission Statement
There are substantial communities of excellent artists working in Asian influenced dance forms throughout Canada. The CanAsian Dance Festival is able to bring together cultural resources and provide a hub for activity in Canada drawing artists and audiences from across the country and beyond. The CanAsian Dance Festival is one of the only organizations in Canada to provide curated, professional showcase opportunities for these dance artists and organizations as well as the opportunity to come together, to share information and resources in meetings, workshops and master classes.
CanAsian Dance Festival’s activities include a biennial Festival, presenting and commissioning works by local, national and international artists. The Festival also has a youth education programme that includes student matinee performances, workshops, and grade specific education guides. Every year we present professional development activities for both the artists involved in the Festival and the community. We have presented five very successful Festivals since our inception in 1997. Each one has seen growth in terms of artistry and audience. In the off-Festival year we present professional development activities and work in collaboration with other dance organizations to showcase extraordinary dance and music that have Asian foundations.
