The organization developed out of a group of local feminist women who began to meet in the early 1980s to discuss and collectively respond to issues of common concern, such as violence against women, the feminization of poverty, and pay equity. Womanspace was incorporated as a society in March of 1993 and served the needs of women and their families in southern Alberta as a non-profit organization. We gained charitable status in August 2021.</p>\n<p>Womanspace Resource Centre currently offers three services primarily for women with low income. Through Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), Womanspace volunteers and a part-time staff person complete and file income tax returns for women. This program has been offered year-round for over a decade (barring a brief closure due to Covid). We also purchase replacement identification documents for women and their children. Thirdly, Womanspace is developing financial literacy programming for people with low income. While Womanspace focuses on women, we do not exclude men who also meet the recommended income threshold as defined by the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.</p>\n<p>Providing year-round services for income tax completion ensures women (and men) with low income can access a range of government financial supports. These supports are often people’s only source of reliable income and are only paid upon tax return filing. In addition, for those who do have paid employment, being refunded any excess deducted income tax can make a significant difference to their living situation. Because Womanspace clients do not owe income tax, they can file their returns at any point during the year, making our year-round clinic vital. We are also one of the few organizations that will pay for people’s replacement identification documents. the public about women’s issues such as the Housing Committee and acts as a catalyst for change.</p>\r\n<p>Femmes Averties / Women Aware played a vital role in creating the Conjugal Violence Housing Committee to initiate legislation change that would allow a victim of domestic violence to cancel their rental lease.This law passed in the Quebec National Assembly this past December 2005 and came into effect April 2006. (Civil code 1974.1)</p>\r\n<p>Our vision is that as women become aware of what is available to them and that they are not alone, a clearer picture of a better life takes shape for them and their children so the picture goes from:</p>\r\n<p>Silence to Communication</p>\r\n<p>Despair to Hope</p>\r\n<p>Isolation to Community & a Support Network</p>\r\n<p>Fear to courage</p>\r\n<p>Shame to pride</p>\r\n<p>Victim to survivor</p>\r\n<p>Survivor to mentor</p>\r\n<h2>About Women Aware / Femmes Averties</h2>\r\n<p>Aware is a support service created by survivors of domestic violence, whose mission is to reach out to victims of domestic violence, while also educating the general public,government officials and the justice system, and on the mutilayered issues of domestic violence.</p>\r\n<p>As survivors of domestic violence, these women recognized a gap in service provision and made it their mission to mentor and provide victims of domestic violence, with first hand personal testimonies of survival and practical strategies for taking the initiative in escaping an abusive relationship.</p>\r\n<p>Aware has advocated and educated with positive results for changes in housing law affecting survivors of domestic violence, and longer sentencing terms for domestic violence offenders. FEMMES AVERTIES a joué un rôle vital dans la création du Comité du Logement de la Violence Conjugale pour un changement de loi qui permettrait aux victimes de résilier leur bail de location : Loi adoptée par l'Assemblée Nationale du Québec en Décembre 2005 et entrée en vigueur en Avril 2006. (Code civil 1974.1)</p>\r\n<p>Notre vision est que les femmes prennent conscience de ce qui est à leur disposition et sachent qu'elles ne sont pas seules.</p>\r\n<p>Ainsi, une image plus claire d'une vie meilleure prend forme pour elles et leurs enfants dans le processus suivant:</p>\r\n<p>Du Silence à la Communication</p>\r\n<p>Du Désespoir à l’Espoir</p>\r\n<p>De l’Isolation au Réseau communale de soutien</p>\r\n<p>De la Peur au Courage</p>\r\n<p>De la Honte à la Fierté</p>\r\n<p>De Victime à Survivante</p>\r\n<p>De Survivante à Mentor.</p>\r\n<h2>À propos de nous</h2>\r\n<p>FEMMES AVERTIES est un service de support crée par des survivantes de violence conjugale ayant pour mission de tendre la main aux autres victimes et éduquer le publique, les fonctionnaires gouvernementaux et le system juridique sur les issues multi-stratifiées de la violence conjugale.</p>\r\n<p>En tant que survivantes, ces femmes ont reconnu une lacune dans la prestation de services et ont fait leur mission d'encadrer et d'assurer aux victimes, avec des témoignages personnels de première main, des stratégies pratiques de survie, pour ayant pris l'initiative d’échapper à une relation abusive.</p>\r\n<p>FEMMES AVERTIES a préconisé et instruit avec des résultats positifs dans l'évolution du droit du logement qui affecte les victimes de violence conjugale, et des termes pénaux plus longs pour les offenseurs.
