Council</p>\n<p>The York Region Arts Council is the only York Region-wide nonprofit charitable arts service organization focused on capacity building, creative placemaking and community engagement in support of artists, arts organizations and creative entrepreneurs. In order to realize the potential of our services, we work in partnership with the Regional Municipality of York, each of the Regions nine municipalities (Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Aurora, King Township, Newmarket, Whitchurch-Stouffville, East Gwillimbury and Georgina) as well as other community organizations and businesses.</p>\n<p>The Arts Council was first incorporated as Arts Link in 2002 with a focus on connecting York Region public and Catholic schools with artists and implementing arts programming for youth. In 2008, Arts Link changed direction and became the York Region Arts Council. The Arts Council was founded in response to the plethora of under-served artists and arts organizations working in silos and lacking the resources and network to grow capacity.</p>\n<p>Over the past nine years, the Arts Council has played a leadership role in the community, providing quality programming and services such as the Arts Exposed Conference (2011-2014), ExperienceYorkRegion.com (2010 to present, formerly YorkScene.com), Artrepreneur Accelerator Program (2015 to present), the York Region Festival Alliance (2015 to present), SpaceFinder York Region (2016 to present) amongst many other tools and forums for professional development and networking. More recently, the organization has added research and advocacy to its portfolio in support of local artists and arts organizations. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Mission</p>\n<p>We have updated our mission as part of our effort to hyper-focus and better articulate who we are and what we do. The goal of this model is to enhance coordinated service delivery through co-locating a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and to improve access to needed services in one central location without having individuals retell their experiences. YRCCS is unique in its position as a conduit for individuals to be connected to justice and community supports and services.</p>\r\n<p>Women dealing with intimate partner violence/domestic violence and sexual violence face 3 key challenges when needing to access the system of services available to them (survivors are often unsure exactly what it is they need):</p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>If they can identify specifically what type of help they need, they may not know who provides it, or where to go to get it.</li>\r\n<li>Once they have identified where to go, getting there can be a problem because agencies can be spread out geographically.</li>\r\n<li>They have to tell their story multiple times.</li>\r\n</ol>\r\n<p>Once connected to YRCCS, survivors are supported through our holistic case management. Referrals are specific to the survivor’s needs, i.e. police advice, housing, employment and social assistance, financial literacy, counselling support, legal aid. Through YRCCS, clients access needed services without having to retell their stories. YRCCS fosters the appropriate environment so that frontline service providers build relationships that lead to trust and benefit clients. This service provides a unique model for collaboration that serves to enhance the safety and well-being of survivors.</p>\r\n<p>We provide the following main supports to survivors:</p>\r\n<p>1. Safety Planning</p>\r\n<p>Safety planning is a daily activity and occurs with every interaction with a client referred to YRCCS. Safety planning is done for individuals who are living with abusers, planning to leave and those who have left.</p>\r\n<p>2. Case Management</p>\r\n<p>Intakes and assessments are conducted daily. Survivors experience reduced stress and trauma when receiving wraparound supports in one location. Their specific needs will be addressed through referrals to needed services.</p>\r\n<p>3. Streamlined Access to Justice</p>\r\n<p>A detective from the Intimate Partner Violence unit is onsite at YRCCS to be able to offer police advice, take reports or video statements; courthouse supports (Victim/Witness Assistance Program worker) are available onsite and survivors can discuss their cases while being supported by YRCCS staff.</p>\r\n<p>4. Too many families involved with York Region Children's Aid Society struggle to provide even the basics for their children.</h2>\r\n<p>For children who are raised in the care of Children’s Aid Society, they often have to grow up faster than a child should need to and are living independently by the age of 18, some as young as 16. Sadly, of the kids who have grown up in the care system following neglect or abuse, only 44 per cent of them will complete high school putting them at further disadvantage. While all Children’s Aid Societies in Ontario receive funding from the provincial government to provide child protection services,<span> </span><strong>provincial funding does not meet the exceptional needs of many of the children and the families served</strong>. With the community’s support, the York Region Children’s Fund can bridge the gap to a happier childhood and a brighter future. Providing childhood enrichment, help with educational needs, and compassionate aid makes a difference – one child at a time. Positive, confidence-building experiences that help vulnerable children and youth develop to their fullest potential are made available, in part, because of community support.
