About CENTRAL OKANAGAN ELIZABETH FRY SOCIETY

\r\n

The first Elizabeth Fry Society was established in BC more than 70 years ago.

\r\n

COEFS is a feminist organization dedicated to ending domestic and sexual violence, providing support services, and advocating for survivors who move through the court system in the Central Okanagan Valley. We achieve this purpose through prevention and intervention services in collaboration with community partners.

\r\n

Services include Community Based Victim Services, Sexual Assault Counselling, Indigenous Victim Services, and Youth Prevention and Empowerment Programs.

\r\n

We are committed to anti-discrimination practices in relation to sex, race, ethnicity, HIV/AIDS, sexual orientation, age, trans and intersex persons, persons with disabilities, and those with criminal records and ensure that their rights are respected and protected. We will ensure that our practices support inclusiveness and will continue to eliminate barriers which prevent accessibility to service.

Feeding Local Families

\n

The Central Okanagan Food Bank is the largest food bank in the Interior of BC and operates out of 2 locations – 1 in Kelowna and 1 in West Kelowna.

\n

We provide nutritional food assistance to over 120,000 people each year, 44% of whom are children and youth, while another 19% are seniors living on a fixed income.

\n

We serve all individuals regardless of age, race, sex, marital status, ethnicity, language, disability, or health issue and are the only organization providing this level of nutritional support to households facing financial and food insecurity within the surrounding region.

\n

Hunger Facts

\n

Hunger and poverty are consistently linked to poorer health and learning outcomes, putting more demands on already scarce health and social services. Proper nutrition is, and always will be, a vital link in the chain of good health.  

\n

Donating to the Central Okanagan Food Bank is one of the most significant and long-lasting contributions you can make to the cause of fighting hunger in your very own community.

Programs at a Glance

\n

Nutritional Improvement Program- Every registered client is provided with reliable, nutritious food hampers every 28 days, which is designed to provide 7 days' worth of fresh, frozen and pantry item groceries. This allows neighbours facing food insecurity to direct financial resources to other vital living expenses such as rent, utility bills and medication.   

\n

Food For Thought – The program works to provide students across School District 23 with access to food so they can stay fueled for play and learning. Each school builds out its breakfast program differently, depending on the needs of the students at that school. In addition, we provide take-home bags with snacks for the students who don't have access to food on weekends. 

\n

Tiny Bundles Program - This program aims to provide nourishment to new and expecting mothers and babies. Mothers receive a perishable food hamper with eggs, dairy, produce, and meat each week. Included in this are formula, diapers, and baby snacks depending on the age of the child. 

\n

Emergency Response Program - Through this program we provide assistance to community members during times of crises when there are food supply interruptions. Our emergency hampers are ready to be dispersed at a moment's notice and contain handheld snacks and meals, and hygiene products.

Community Foundations are charitable organizations dedicated to improving communities in specific geographical areas. The Central Okanagan Heritage Society (COHS), a Federal charity and a Registered BC Society, was formed in 1982. The Society began when a committed group of concerned citizens rolled up their sleeves to save and restore the historic Benvoulin Church. Over the past thirty-six years, this work has continued with conservation of and advocacy for other heritage sites including Guisachan House and gardens, Brent’s Grist Mill and through the annual Heritage Awards.

Today, the Society has two part-time staff, a seasonal part-time gardener and a site caretaker and operations are assisted by a volunteer Board of Directors, volunteers and its members. The Society owns three heritage buildings: Benvoulin Church and Reid Hall, McIver House and McDougall House, and works with the City of Kelowna and community groups to conserve and rehabilitate other heritage sites and buildings and to educate the community about the importance of heritage. COHS also manages the City of Kelowna Heritage Grants Program and advises homeowners on conservation of their heritage homes.

Who We Are and Why it Matters

The Central Okanagan Hospice Association (COHA) exists to ensure that no one in our community has to face death or grief alone. For over 43 years, we have walked alongside individuals and families, offering emotional, practical, and spiritual support through some of life’s most difficult moments. From comfort at the bedside to guidance through grief, we are here to provide care without financial or social barriers.

Serving communities from Peachland to Lake Country, we reach people wherever they are—whether in Kelowna Hospice House, hospital, residential care, at home, or at the COHA August Centre, our trained and compassionate volunteers and professionals are there every step of the way.

We are a registered, not for profit organization heavily relying on donations. Together, we help ensure dignity, comfort, and connection for all who need us.

About Central Okanagan Land Trust

COLT History

\r\n

The Central Okanagan Land Trust (COLT) was formed by the Central Okanagan Foundation in 1991 to accept donations of land and other assets so COLT can purchase or hold land for the preservation, conservation, or fostering of nature or wildlife sanctuaries, parks or reserves, for future generations.

\r\n

\r\n

Today

\r\n

As a registered charitable organization, COLT works closely with donors and others to move this important mandate forward in the rapidly-urbanizing Central Okanagan region. The Trust also continues to work with the Central Okanagan Foundation as a repository of valuable Endowment Funds that help purchase land, raise public awareness, provide land stewardship, and engage new donors to leave a legacy for their families and future generations.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue has been providing the region with life-saving search and rescue services since 1954. COSAR is the oldest SAR team in the province and handles everything from technical back country rescues to searching for missing children and elderly individuals with dementia. Every person within the Central Okanagan has the potential to benefit from the services provided by the team.
