World Animal Protection is one of the largest global animal welfare organizations working toward a future where animals live free from cruelty and suffering. Our work focuses on the issues that have the biggest impact on reducing the scale, duration and intensity of animal suffering and make the greatest difference – directly or indirectly – for the largest number of animals worldwide. About 90% of these people live in developing countries. 80% of the causes of blindness are treatable or preventable. 75% of blind persons cannot gain employment, even in developed countries and only 10% of blind children in developing countries have the ability to attend school. 60% of the blind in Africa are women and they face the hardship of lacking access to vital community services. 65% of those visually impaired are over the age of 50.

Capacity Building - training & technical expertise for organizations of and for the blind, particularly in developing countries.

Information Sharing - tools and resources made available to all members, enabling them to raise awareness, access the latest information and to speak on issues of importance with a common voice.

WBU programs and activities reflect the following six priority areas:

L’Union Mondiale des Aveugles – Changer le regard sur la cécité.

Principale organisation représentant et parlant au nom des aveugles et des malvoyants au plan international, l’Union Mondiale des Aveugles (UMA) tire sa force de ses membres, qui viennent de près de 190 pays dans le monde. Pour atteindre notre vision, notre mission et nos objectifs, nous pouvons compter sur la coopération et le soutien de nos membres. L’UMA reflète les aspirations des personnes aveugles en matière d’égalité et de pleine participation. L’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé estime qu’il y a actuellement 284 millions de personnes aveugles ou ayant des difficultés visuelles graves dans le monde. Environ 90 % de ces personnes vivent dans des pays en développement ; 80 % des causes de la cécité peuvent être traitées ou prévenues ; 75 % des personnes aveugles ne trouvent pas d’emploi, même dans les pays développés ; et seulement 10 % des enfants dans les pays en développement ont la possibilité d’aller à l’école ; 60 % des aveugles en Afrique sont des femmes et elles font face à un cruel manque d’accès aux services communautaires, vitaux ; enfin 65 % des déficients visuels ont plus de 50 ans.
