The Orchestre Métropolitain was founded in 1981 by some of the finest music graduates from Quebec schools. Today, it now numbers about 60 professional musicians.

Since 2000, the Métropolitain has enjoyed a string of successes under the direction of its current conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

From the very outset, the Métropolitain developed a unique approach founded on an unshakeable determination to democratize classical music by bringing it to people in their neighbourhood. Since its inception, the Métropolitain has made a priority of breaking down economic barriers with a policy that makes tickets affordable to everyone. It has in fact developed the Music Lovers of the Future program, which aims to initiate youths to the world of classical music. 

The Métropolitain is also a byword for an invitation to enjoy musical culture through pre-concert talks, and through its conductor who discusses each of the works on the program.

C’est en 1981 que l’Orchestre Métropolitain voit le jour à l’initiative d’excellents musiciens diplômés d’écoles québécoises. Il s’est, au fil des années, beaucoup développé et compte aujourd’hui une soixantaine de musiciens professionnels.

Sous la direction de Yannick Nézet-Séguin depuis l’an 2000, Yannick et l'Orchestre cumulent succès après succès.

Le Métropolitain a une réelle volonté de démocratiser la musique classique en la rendant accessible au plus grand nombre grâce à une politique tarifaire à la portée de tous.

Très attaché à la sensibilisation du jeune public, l’Orchestre offre aux écoles de Montréal et de ses environs une initiation à la musique classique avec son programme « Jeunes mélomanes en devenir ».

Le Métropolitain, c’est une véritable invitation à la culture musicale grâce aux conférences préconcerts et la présentation par le chef de chacune des œuvres interprétées.
