In Kathmandu, Nepal over 29,000 families live in squatter camps scattered around the city. They are known as Dalits (formerly untouchables) and most work as day labourers, cleaners, garbage collectors, and road sweepers.
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a total lockdown in Nepal, and many people from the Dalit community to lost their jobs. While this already vulnerable population is having to figure out how they will put food on the table, they are also unable to protect themselves from the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases within their tight knit communities.
Aerosan, a Canadian registered charity, has been working in Nepal for the past 4 years building female centric public toilets. The technology installed in these toilets converts the waste into biogas for use in local tea shops. Aerosan trains and offers dignified employment in our toilets for the sanitation workers from these squatter communities. With our support, they have also set up a co-op to help members find jobs and enhance financial independence.
With the lockdown being enforced, our toilet operations have temporarily shut down and we have shifted our focus to help to decrease the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases in these communities. We need your help! Aerosan and the co-op have designed a family hygiene kit, consisting of alcohol-based sanitizer, liquid soap, surgical masks, latex gloves and towels contained in a bucket. The bucket will supply protection for a family of 5 for three months and costs only $ 31.50 to put together.
Working with local governments – who supply emergency food – our aim is to distribute these hygiene kits to as many squatter community households as possible. Our initial aim is to supply hygiene kits to 500 of the most vulnerable households, for a total fundraising goal of $15,750.
