Surviving Breast Cancer is not the end of the battle; it’s the beginning of the healing journey.
As a forty-year-old single mother of three, Cathy could not justify the cost of purchasing new breast prosthesis after undergoing a mastectomy due to breast cancer. She felt profoundly uncomfortable and ashamed of stuffing herbras with old socks. Yet she just could not afford to spend $450 on breast prosthesis and the other post-surgery supports she needed.
Luckily, Cathy was referred to after BREAST CANCER by a friend and was provided with a new breast prosthesis, along with three mastectomy bras and educational support to help her cope with her new life after breast cancer. Today, Cathy is thriving and supporting other women that she has met through to after BREAST CANCER.
All too often, women like Cathy who are recovering from mastectomy surgery face significant barriers to accessing and paying for breast prostheses and mastectomy bras. These items provide comfort, dignity, and an improved everyday quality of life to these amazing women. Yet the costs put them out of reach for many low-income breastcancer “graduates” (survivors).
Since the founding of the charity, this program has been an unprecedented success! after BREAST CANCER has provided over 1750 post-operative mastectomy bras and camisoles as well as 966 breast prostheses to 505 women across Canada. None of this would be possible without the generosity of our incredible donor community –passionate individuals who believe that all women deserve to live their best lives after breast cancer.
We are excited to be launching our S|HE Thrives 365 Campaign. Our goal is to raise 365 ABC KIT!s in 365 days!
This is where we need your help!
In order to meet our goal, we need to purchase 110 KIT!s by the end of 2018. Each ABC KIT! contains the essentials for the first stages of recovery after breast surgery and contributes to a graduate’s comfort during initial recovery. They contain two temporary breast prostheses, a mastectomy camisole,a front closure mastectomy bra; two drainage pockets; a seat belt pillow; a bra and breast prosthesis fitting instructional guide; and the S|HE Calendar which shares encouraging messages from our Ambassadors, women who have completed breast cancer treatments.
Whether you are able to donate a whole kit ($250), or contribute to part of a kit, we would greatly appreciate your support.
Thank you for helping us build community of women who have survived breast cancer. Thank you for helping us changes lives.
With Profound Gratitude,
after BREAST CANCER TEAM
