Founded in 2013, after BREAST CANCER helps breast cancer “graduates” of limited financial resources and no insurance obtain their basic needs at no personal cost. after BREAST CANCER provides women with essential items such as post-operative mastectomy camisoles, mastectomy bras and breast prostheses. Our charity identifies underserved areas in breast cancer survivorship, areas that are frequently overlooked and lacking financial resources.
On behalf of after BREAST CANCER, we ask that your organisation, help us in our mission to support breast cancer graduates. As a Canada-wide registered charity, after BREAST CANCER asks for your help to support the ABC KIT! program with a financial gift. Your generous gift will help us to continue transforming the lives of breast cancer graduates who cannot afford the necessities required post-surgery.
Among Canadian women, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of female cancer deaths. In 2017 alone, more than 26,000 people were first diagnosed with breast cancer (Canadian Cancer Society). Altogether, more than two million women are currently coping with the reality of breast cancer, including physical and emotional challenges, that do not end with treatment and surgery. Women recovering from surgery often face significant financial barriers accessing and paying for mastectomy camisoles, breast prostheses and mastectomy bras. These products provide both comfort and dignity while helping to improve their quality of life.
After BREAST CANCER identified a need among graduates to obtain these very necessary items. Thus, we created the ABC KIT! for breast cancer graduates of limited financial means and no insurance. Each ABC Kit! contains the essentials for the first stages of recovery after breast surgery and contributes to a graduate’s comfort during initial recovery; the ABC Kit! also helps women transition to daily living post-surgery. Included in this ABC KIT! is two temporary breast prostheses, a mastectomy camisole, a front closure mastectomy bra; two drainage pockets; a seatbelt pillow; a bra and breast prosthesis fitting instructional guide; and the S|HE Calendar which shares encouraging messages from our Ambassadors, women who have completed breast cancer treatments.
After BREAST CANCER’S mission is work with hospitals and cancer support centres across Ontario to identify women in need. To be eligible for this program, patients must be pre-surgery and in financial need. Graduates finish with this program once they are surgically healed (usually after two to three months) at which point they will be given the option of continuing with after BREAST CANCER’s signature program, S|HE THRIVES.
Each individual ABC KIT! is valued at $250. after BREAST CANCER estimates that the initial outlay cost to distribute 500 ABC KITS! will be $126,750. Your generous investment gift will go toward the financial investment needed to purchase the items in each ABC KIT!to breast cancer graduates.
