Nearly 35 years ago, our founders launched the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic. Their vision was that one-day violence against women would be eradicated, and the need for our services would cease. Sadly, after many years it seems our work has just begun. As women find their voices, demand for our support is racing ahead of our ability to respond.
The Clinic provides legal services, trauma-informed counselling services, and interpretation services in more than 200 languages. Violence against women is a non-partisan issue, one that cuts across all communities, and all levels of income.
In our 2016/2017 fiscal year, the Clinic supported 4,700 women. In 2017/2018 that number rose to 7,000 women, representing a 49 percent increase. Last year, the number of women the Clinic assisted rose to more than 9,000 — a 91.5 percent increase over three years.
