The BC SPCA is helping to care for evacuated animals who have been evacuated due to wildfires during BC’s provincial state of emergency. We've opened up an Emergency Animal Shelter for evacuated dogs in a Prince George warehouse.
As you can imagine there is a lot involved in setting up a temporary Emergency Animal Shelter. We need to set up spaces for large dogs, small dogs, nervous dogs etc. Also, areas for animal intake, food preparation, exercise runs, medical examination and isolation. All this, quickly and in a space not intended for animals! With so many animals in close quarters vaccinations need to be checked and updated, and health closely monitored. Plus, this is likely very traumatic for many animals so close attention needs to be paid to feeding, grooming, and walks and love to help reduce stress.
We’re nearing capacity there, and at our Prince George branch and may need to expand if further evacuations come through. We’ve also evacuated three of our branches, and moved those animals to safety in the Lower Mainland.
