Big Brothers Big Sisters of Centre Wellington
I will do this for spiritual growth and to raise funds for a cause that is close to my heart and runs deep in my family – mental health. My mother has battled with depression and bipolar all her life. This was not easy growing up with as a child and especially a teenager, and even now as someone who is trying to care for her. My 39-year-old brother battles with bipolar and schizophrenia and has been in and out of mental health hospitals and group homes since he was 19. He currently lives with my 79-year-old father, who struggles to care for him.
My children have had close friends die by suicide. Our friends Darcie and Paul Shepperd lost their son Cody and it is heartbreaking that our suicide rate in Wellington County is higher than the provincial average. Something needs to change.
By putting my time and energy into this project, I hope to inspire others to be more aware and support local mental health initiatives and save lives.
