Dustin was seven years old, his mom had recently passed away, and he needed an adult to be there for him. “My dad and family were going through a lot of grief and challenges too, and I just needed someone to listen to me and spend time with me who wasn’t also dealing with the same horrible experience at the time.”
There are many youth like Dustin facing adversities such as poverty, violence, family instability, and identity-based discrimination. These hardships can negatively affect a child’s physical and mental health.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of London and Area, Dustin was enrolled in our one-on-one mentoring program and was matched with Katherine, an adult mentor. She helped him cope with the loss of his mother and learn that while his mother could never be replaced, there were other adults in his community who valued him and who he could learn from.
