Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria currently has 111 youth with various risk profiles waiting for their mentors on our waitlist.
Children and families are urgently requesting our support. Youth waiting require dedicated time every week with a positive adult role model, and unfortunately, we are unable to match them in a timely manner without additional resources.
Our current dilemma is... Families requesting our support feel some urgency and are concerned for their child’s well-being. On average youth identifying as female will wait 3 months and youth identifying as male will wait 12 months before being matched with their mentor.
It takes care and expertise to ensure that our youth are safely matched, and we require additional funding to meet the growing demand of children and youth needing mentors.
This is a reality that we find heartbreaking!
Children and youth that come to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria typically struggle with 3 or more adversities which may include:
- Literacy or behavioral challenges
- Social isolation and / or mental health challenges
- Neglect or emotional abuse
- Death of a family member
Mentoring provides prevention and intervention at a critical time of risk for our youth. Mentors increase a young person’s resiliency by:
- Providing opportunities to develop healthy behaviors
- Improving interpersonal relationships
- Increasing civic engagement
- Cultivating abilities to shape their own lives
Your donations are essential in helping us close the gap between children and youth waiting and children and youth matched with a mentor.
