Rachel always knew that she wanted to be a mother. Newly married, she and her husband, Mark, were expecting their first child. As a teenager who had previously sought counselling for her depression and anxiety, Rachel realized that she wanted to be proactive and prepare herself for any stress or anxiety that pregnancy and motherhood might bring. She enrolled herself in counselling at Calgary Counselling Centre.
Rachel’s counsellor helped to refresh her on the skills she would need. She became more active and enjoyed walking and doing yoga when she is having a stressful or difficult day. She began journaling daily to take time out and reflect. This gave Rachel the opportunity to determine what she was truly anxious about and discuss it with her counsellor.
As her pregnancy progressed her counsellor continued to emphasize that what she was feeling during her pregnancy was normal – she planned and worried just like lots of expectant mothers would about what life will be like with her new child. “I just really hoped she didn’t have my husband’s nose!” she said jokingly. Rachel felt comforted and better prepared as a result.
