Canada 150 Projects at the Canadian Automotive Museum

The Canadian Automotive Museum will commemorate Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017 with much needed improvements to its facility and exhibitions. Several projects are planned that will improve the visitor experience and the museum's ability to care for its priceless collection of Canadian automobiles. These projects are supported by the Government of Canada, but require matching funds from individual donors and corporate sponsors. The projected cost of these projects is $235k, of which $190k has already been secured. Please consider supporting the Canadian Automotive Museum, with your help we can continue to make the museum a world-class destination in downtown Oshawa.

Why are these projects important?

The story of the automobile in Canada is one that connects all Canadians over the past 120 years. The collection tells the story from nationally significant events to everyday life ranging from royal visits to daily commutes, trips to the cottage, car shows, and auto races. The automotive story is told through cars, trucks, and motorcycles, as well as periodicals, emblems, license plates, brochures, and tools. No other institution in Canada tells such an important story in such a unique way.

The Canadian Automotive Museum has operated in a century-old former Chevrolet-Oakland car dealership building since 1963. While this authentic historic setting adds to the visitor experience, it requires maintenance and upgrades to thrive in the 21st century. Improved climate control will allow the museum to borrow objects from international collections, and create a comfortable visitor experience year-round. Exterior facade improvements will not only increase the museum's street presence, but also reduce energy costs by improving the museum's insulation. New exhibitions will engage younger generations of visitors who have different experiences and options on automobile than their grandparents generation. Through inter-generational dialogue not only will Canada's automotive past be discussed, but its future as well.
