My dad, George, recently celebrated his 88th birthday. He used to be a university professor – now he can’t even read a book and doesn’t recognize his own children. He has progressive dementia. My mom is his full-time caregiver and wants to keep him at home for as long as she can.
We enrolled him in the MedicAlert Safely Home® program, which is a partnership between MedicAlert and Alzheimer Society of Canada, to make sure he always has a voice in an emergency. We hoped that he would never need to use it. But one day, dad was napping when mom went out to a doctor’s appointment. When he woke up, he went for his usual walk around the block but took a wrong turn and quickly became confused as he walked further from home.
Thankfully, a good Samaritan noticed his distress and called the police. When officers arrived, he couldn’t remember where he lived. They noticed his blue MedicAlert bracelet and called the 24/7 Emergency Hotline. Within minutes, they had access to my dad’s medical profile and learned he had dementia. They were given the contact information they needed to reach us in order to bring him safely home. It gives me peace of mind to know that MedicAlert is just a phone call away if ever my dad needs it.
