The Tickle Swim for Mental Health is a 5km swim across the tickle from Portugal Cove St. Phillips to Bell Island, or reverse depending on conditions, in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association's work in Newfoundland and Labrador. It will take place on August 18th at 7 a.m., (with Sunday as a weather day).  For more details on this event, visit the Tickle Swim website at

The aim of the event is to raise awareness surrounding mental health issues in our province, and encourage people to maintain good mental fitness just as they maintain physical fitness. Secondly, this event aims to raise funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Newfoundland and Labrador Division (CMHA-NL), to support their work across this province. Swimmers of all abilities are welcome provided they are fit enough to complete the distance.

This is not a race although some friendly competition does occur.

In 2013, the 5km swim was conceived and swam by community activist and current Deputy Mayor of the city of St. John's Sheilagh O'Leary. Sheilagh's vision came from her personal belief in the importance of improving and maintaining good mental heath through physical fitness.

The fundraising goal for 2018 is to surpass $30,000!
