Facing forced marriage and female circumcision in her home country of Cameroon, Claudette Nwana fled to Canada in 2014.
She learned about Carty House while living in an Ottawa women’s shelter where she shared a single room with three other women. By March 2015, a bed had become available at Carty House.
“When I asked if the room was for me alone and I was told yes, I fell on the bed and was thanking them. It was like a dream to me,” the former resident told guests at last fall’s Carty House Gala. “My time there was so peaceful. Carty House helped me focus and concentrate on what I wanted to become.”
Claudette has since had her Cameroonian bachelor degree in sociology and anthropology recognized in Canada. Today she lives independently and is working as a community support worker. She looks forward to starting a master’s degree in social work next year.
“None of this would be possible without the support I received at Carty House,” she says.
We certainly couldn’t do the work we do without the generous support of donors like you.
As you know, Carty House does not receive any government funding. We rely solely on the financial and material contributions of our dedicated supporters.
This holiday season, help newcomer women achieve their full potential.
Your tax deductible donation of $50, $75, $100 or $150 will be put to good use providing refugee women with a clean and comfortable place to live for up to 16 months, as well as language tutoring, employment assistance, education and counselling referrals and help transitioning to permanent housing.
Or, consider supporting the women of Carty House all year long with a monthly donation of $10, $15 or $20.
We hope we can count on your continued support to ensure women like Claudette are able to receive the care they need to start fresh in Canada.
From all of us here at Carty House, we wish you and your family a joyous holiday season!
