Kim Stenberg, a respected mortgage broker, single mother of three daughters, and St. Albert community member, suffered a horrific crime on the afternoon of May 30th. While picking up her daughters from her estranged husband’s home, he attempted to brutally take her life. Fortunately, Kim and her daughters were able to flee, but not without enduring significant physical and emotional trauma. After an extensive manhunt, her ex-husband was found dead by his own hand, leaving Kim and her daughters to piece their lives back together.
Kim is now trying to rebuild her life and care for her daughters in the aftermath of this terrible, premeditated crime. Sadly, her story is not uncommon. For years, Kim’s husband, the primary income earner, exercised financial control and emotional abuse over the family. After enduring years of mistreatment, Kim found the courage to end their marriage. However, the ongoing separation and court proceedings became increasingly hostile, culminating in the tragic events of May 30th.
Life today:
Kim has lost the limited financial support she previously received from her ex-husband and now faces numerous financial challenges. Her three daughters require ongoing counseling to process the trauma they’ve experienced. Additionally, one of Kim’s daughters has special needs and will require lifelong educational and support services.
Kim herself is still recovering from the mental and physical effects of the violence she endured. As a self-employed professional, she has had to reduce her business hours to focus on her daughters' well-being and to try to bring normalcy back to their lives. Furthermore, she continues to face legal battles in court regarding her divorce and the estate.
In partnership with Calvert Home Mortgage Investment Corporation, and the Charity they manage, the Charitable Foundation of the Family, we are reaching out to the community for financial support for the Stenberg family. Tax receipts will be provided to all contributors to the fund.
Those wishing to donate to the Stenberg Family Fund can send a cheque to the Charitable Foundation of the Family, indicating the Stenberg Fund in the memo line. Donations can also be made online here (please note a 4% service charge applies to donations made through the website). Wire transfers to the Foundation are also accepted; please contact us directly to coordinate wire transfers.
Any unused funds will be donated to Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation, a trauma- informed facility. “More than just a bed, we’ll provide a broad range of services including outreach, case management, court support, and specialized supports for children”.
Kim hopes to advocate for family safety during non-amicable marriage separations in the future and is grateful to be a survivor.
We are very grateful for your consideration of a donation to this fund to support Kim, and her children’s journey of healing and support – and for your sharing a statement with our community against domestic violence.
