Founded over 60 years ago, CISV is a global movement dedicated to educating and inspiring action for peace. We believe that we can help change the world by providing life-changing experiences and building friendships that last a lifetime.
We offer an exciting blend of seven educational programmes and amazing volunteer opportunities for the young and the young at heart. Our fun, ‘learning by doing’ programmes begin with our original Village, a four-week residential camp for 11-year-olds. From there, CISV offers Interchange (ages 12-15), Step Up (ages 14-15), Youth Meeting (ages 12-25), Seminar (ages 17-18) and Peoples Project (ages 19+ with no upper age limit).
"building global friendship"
CISV is a charitable, independent, non-political, educational, volunteer organization promoting peace education and cross-cultural friendship.
We aim to stimulate the life-long development of amicable relationships, effective communication skills, cooperative abilities, and appropriate leadership towards a just and fair world.
About CISV Saskatoon
We are a global community of dedicated volunteers, creating opportunities for all ages to experience the excitement and enrichment of cultural diversity through our educational programmes. We are founded on our belief that peace is possible through friendship - and that the real difference can be made by starting with children.
Our values are
CISV provides a range of unique, education group activities, which develop cross-cultural understanding in children, youth and adults from around the world. By encouraging respect for cultural difference and the development of self-awareness, CISV empowers each participant to incorporate these values into their lives as they become global citizens and strive for a more peaceful world.
Although CISV is a fun and an exciting experience, there is a lot more to it than just that. Our multicultural programmes are based on sound educational principles and objectives.
Peace Education and Active Global Citizens
Peace Education provides us with the Attitudes, Skills and Knowledge we need to become agents of change, bothlocally and globally. In other words, to become Active Global Citizens.
The four main content areas of Peace Education in CISV Programmes are:
Explores the identity of the individual and then asks us to consider ourselves within our own and the wider
Considers how human rights affect every aspect of our lives and how violations can lie at the root of problems
such as poverty, violence and lawlessness.
Conflict and Resolution
Helps us to understand how conflicts can arise deliberately or otherwise and what can be done to help bring a peaceful resolution.
Looks for integrated ways to promote economic and social well-being, while protecting the environment through the responsible use of natural resources.
‘Learning by doing’ is simply a way of saying learning from direct experience, rather than from reading books or listening to lectures. It is characteristic of all CISV Programmes and you may hear this process referred to as ‘Experiential Learning’.
