Thrive is the only organization in Hamilton with a specialized service and program focused exclusively on helping children and youth who have been sexually victimized. Through the Sexual Abuse Assessment and Treatment program (SAAT), children and youth receive individualized trauma and abuse assessments, utilizing evidence based, best practice intervention and treatment modalities. We also offer Hamilton's only mental health counseling program for immigrant and refugee children and youth (and their families), who have experienced trauma, or who struggling with acculturation challenges. The premise of the work we do is based on providing treatment, education and prevention initiatives; all of which promotes child safety, healthy development and contributes towards building healthier communities.
Globally and within our own community things are changing. This is a time of growing awareness and understanding, conversations, discussions, and we are receiving an ever growing number of disclosures about childhood sexual abuse. With the proliferation of social media into everyday lives and movements such as #metoo, important messages are reaching more people than ever before. At Thrive, we welcome this shift as an opportunity to grow awareness, educate and ultimately prevent childhood sexual abuse.
We know children and youth in Hamilton are incredibly resilient, full of promise and, if faced with any adversity or challenges, given the appropriate supports and tools, they can, and do, thrive. This year we have released a limited edition set of four unique greeting cards. Each card showcases a piece of artwork created by a child in treatment at Thrive. Art is often used as a way for children to express or communicate feelings that are difficult to put into words, and can help externalize or create distance from a difficult situation.
