Our Healthy Food Program offers nutritious, locally sourced lunches to grade K to 9 students at Cumberland Community School four days a week. Meals are affordable and popular with subsidies available for families requiring support. Breakfast, fresh fruit, veggies and other snacks are also provided throughout the day as needed.
Over the past year, CCSS served an average of 2,515 meals per month (up from 1,460 per month the year before) and 22% of these were provided free of charge to students needing support. This valuable program ensures that all Cumberland students have access to healthy food and nutrition. Children who are properly nourished are better learners with fewer behavioural problems.
In addition, participants are exposed to a variety of different foods, including a monthly salad bar, which helps them to establish a healthy diet. Students enrolled in the program share meals together providing an opportunity to develop friendships and social connections. The kitchen provides a safe space for children to get a snack, spend time and connect with a caring adult. Students routinely help with preparing meals and cleaning up, teaching them important life skills.
This program also provides opportunities for local residents to volunteer and connect with children in their neighbourhood. Over the past year, 14 individuals contributed a total of 244 volunteer hours to this program.
A tax deductible donation of:
- $30 would provide a child with subsidized lunches for 2 weeks.
- $60 would provide a child with healthy lunches for 1 month.
- $600 would provide a child with healthy lunches for an entire school year.
Please consider supporting CCSS. Help us to make a difference in the lives of Village youth, residents and their families by becoming a monthly donor or making a one time contribution.
