Our Mission

The international training program

The main objective of the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute (CVAI) is to hold annually in Montreal an international training program for talented young singers eager to perfect their art. The first edition took place in June 2004.

During three weeks in July and August, young singers, graduate or postgraduate students at major institutions or young professionals, receive six hours of daily training in voice, acting, languages and diction, through individual and group sessions.

Since 2004, more than 500 singers have participated to our training program and some are now performing on the most important stages around the world, such as soprano France Bellemare, mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne, or baritone Étienne Dupuis.

This program is made possible through the cooperation of the International Vocal Arts Institute (IVAI), the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation for Young Canadian Opera Singers and the Université de Montréal Faculty of Music.

The Montreal Vocal Arts Festival

The Montreal Vocal Arts Festival is held alongside during the same period. More than ten events (concerts, recitals and master classes) are offered to the public and around 3000 people are attending them. These events brings to light many fascinating aspects of the training of young singers, whose discipline is often compared to that of Olympic athletes.

What do we do with your money?

Your donation help us to cover part of the investments required by the organization and presentation of the international training program and the Festival. The money is also instrumental in bringing some 20 world-renowned teachers in Montreal. Furthermore, many Canadian singers receive grants allowing them to take part in CVAI. You will also contribute to develop and increase the visibility of the young singers on the national and world stage while helping us feature our some fifty participants in public events. Finally, you contribute to encounters between singers and teachers that are particularly meaningful in the early stages of a career.
