Save lives and invest in a child's future -- free of domestic violence.
Our isolation to combat COVID-19 and to keep us all safe, is also concealing the evidence of increasing domestic violence across Canada. Only when the violence escalates to femicide are we aware of the violence within the homes in our community.
For some women, isolation at home is traumatic, dangerous, even deadly.
At Discovery House – with your support – we are facing the national domestic violence crisis head on. We deliver much-needed resources and support to women and children fleeing domestic violence.
COVID-19 reduced the options for finding accommodation with friends and family due to physical distancing. Many landlords are not taking new applicants. For many, it feels like there’s nowhere to go. Add the stress of job lay-offs, pay cuts, and school closures to the pre-existing abusive behaviours, and the result is the rising abuse rates across the country. Staying home just isn’t safe.
A woman is killed by a current or former intimate partner every 6 days.
Discovery House provides transitional housing complete with furnishing, necessities, and a caring community. The wrap-around support includes child development programs, parenting programs, and access to mental health clinicians. Approximately 600 women and children escaping domestic violence each year find the safety net they need to heal from their trauma, rebuild their lives, and achieve self-sufficiency at Discovery House – breaking the cycle of domestic violence.
We need your help now, more than ever.
