It may seem an unlikely medical implement, but a bicycle is an essential tool in providing healthcare to people living in the many hard-to-reach locales where MSF doctors work. In some parts of the world, rainy season can make roads impassable to cars for months at a time. Sometimes, roads simply don’t exist. Bicycles fill the void, providing vital transportation for health promotion activities and for setting up mobile clinics to treat those living deep in the bush. MSF community health workers also use bikes to visit patients at home to ensure they’re taking their medication properly and to check on the progress of seriously ill patients who aren’t able to leave their homes. This gift is removing barriers to healthcare and ensuring people living in the most remote outposts can still receive the medical care they need.
