Your REALTORS® Community Foundation was created in 1986 by a group of very forward thinking REALTORS®. When they created our mission, “The REALTORS® CommunityLet’s take a closer lookat that mission:
Shelter... There are at least eight women’s shelters in and around Edmonton andnumerous addiction recovery facilities and yet these shelters still have to turn peopleaway. Can you imagine what it would be like to finally find the courage to leave theabusive situation you’re in, only to be told “Sorry, we have no beds”. Can you imaginewhat it would feel like to have finally reached that point where you are tired of beingaddicted and want to start down the road to recovery, only to be told, “There’s a waitinglist”.
Homelessness... Did you know that on average there are 274 homelessEdmontonians, and that half of those counted live either on the street or at a shelter?
Hunger... According to the Edmonton Food Bank, each month more than 13,000people receive hampers from the food bank or from one of over 210 agencies, churches or food depots. The Food Bank also distributes more than 350,000 meals and snack programs each month with approximately 40% of those clients served beingchildren under 18.
Crime Prevention… Youth Empowerment Services Society (YESS) provides supportto youth who have found most other doors closed to them. What are these youth to dofor food, money and shelter? Do they turn to crime? Or do they become addictedbecause they think it’s the only way to cope with the hopelessness?
Special Projects…Mental Health is a hot topic today – so many problems stem frommental health issues. Seniors organizations – the people who helped shape our greatcity and province have earned our help! Literacy Programs – if you can’t read, how doyou get a job? Service dogs – making it possible for people with disabilities to live anormal life. And lastly, a Hospice Society – to have, care and support at end of life.
So please, I encourage you to read through our report and look at all the charities wesupported this year. Take a little time to learn about the people we helped and all theinteresting needs that were a little better off as a result of your efforts. And please takea moment to think about about the six charities highlighted in this report. Perhapsthen you’ll see why I am so proud to work for each and every one of you, why I believein the REALTORS® Community Foundation so much and why I’m so passionateabout continuing the great legacy that was started over 27 years ago by that group ofvery forward thinking REALTORS®.
