REALTORS® Community Foundation - Edmonton & Area
Sid van der Meulen is an energetic 83 year old and Past President of the REALTORS® Community Foundation and REALTORS® Association of Edmonton. He planned to the Netherlands this summer to remember and pay tribute to those who gave their all to liberate the Netherlands 75 years ago.
With the global pandemic, this has been postponed for next year. Sid hopes to participate in the race next year, and has chosen to stay positive and continue raising funds!
A letter from Sid:
For most of you the year 2020 is probably just another year, but for some of us the year 2020 is a very special year. It is the year that we remember that 75 years ago the Allied forces liberated Western Europe from the tyranny of the Nazis. For me personally, and the Dutch in general, it was not the allied soldiers but the Canadians who liberated us. It was the Canadian soldiers who gave us as children chocolate or a piece of chewing gum – we will never forget them!
The banner pictured below has adorned my balcony for the past 25 years! This week I remember April 15, 1945 on that Sunday afternoon when a Canadian tank rolled into our village on to liberate us from the oppressor. What a joy! What a jubilation!! We were free!!! We gave thanks to God freedom!!!
I had planned to be in Holland to take part in the bike tour and celebrations this year, however those plans had to change due to the current pandemic. Both the liberation celebrations and the 235km single day bike tour have been postponed until next year. By participating in the bicycle tour, I was planning to raise funds for E4C’s School Lunch Program through REALTORS® Community Foundation Edmonton & Area, something I’ve done twice before. For this momentous year, my goal was to raise $ 75,000.00.
I still hope and plan to participate next year in the bicycle tour if my health allows me to do so. In the mean time I would solicit your support for the school lunch program with a donation, if you so desire to on this site.
Thank you so much for your consideration. Together let us value our freedom!
Sid van der Meulen
About the E4C Lunch Program:
Helping people living in poverty improve their food security is one of e4c’s main focus areas, because we understand the impact hunger has on people. We also know that people living in poverty are more likely to have limited access to sufficient and nutritious food. That’s why we’re involved in initiatives like our School Nutrition programs, where together with the community we are able to support over 6,000 children each day by providing healthy breakfasts, mid-morning or afternoon snacks and lunch. Our summer snack program is equally important, as it offers kids who might not have access to regular meals once the school year is out, essential food during the summer months.
