Janet Hughes led a life of leadership and service to others in need. In 1980, Janet realized through her other volunteer roles that hunger was affecting the lives of many people in Edmonton. She also noticed that there was an incredible amount of edible food being wasted. Janet, along with other like-minded individuals, charted a course to help feed our neighbours in need by setting up The Edmonton Gleaners Association, more commonly known as The Edmonton Food Bank in 1981. This accomplishment meant the first Food Bank in Canada was established.
Janet's caring nature and her commitment to community led her to become the founding Board Chair of Edmonton’s Food Bank. Throughout her life she remained passionate about seeking solutions to food insecurity in our city and for more than 25 years devoted her time and expertise to the Food Bank.
