The Children's Republic

Confined within the walls of the Warsaw Ghetto, Dr. Janusz Korczak struggles to protect the children at his orphanage from the horrors of the Second World War. There is not enough food or pairs of eyes to keep watch over them. Between a troublemaking thief, an abandoned girl, a malnourished boy, and a violin prodigy, Janusz has his hands full, but together they fight for beauty and hope in a world crumbling around them. Based on the WWII advocacy work of Dr. Janusz Korczak, The Children’s Republic is a reminder of the hope that can still be found in a world devoid of freedom and the necessities of life.

The play, written by Hannah Moscovitch and directed by Richard Rose will be co-produced by The Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company and Sebastian Biasucci.  The play will feature two professional actors playing Korczak and Stefa, the leaders of the orphanage, and will have a consulting sound designer. The teenage orphan characters would be acted by students from TanenbaumCHAT and supported by a production team of TanenbaumCHAT’s students. Students would produce the complex sound design, executing costumes, props, tour producing, dramaturgy and study guides. There would be post-show talkbacks led by TanenbaumCHAT students with audiences from local Jewish schools and TDSB schools during Jewish History Month in May, when the TDSB is devoted to addressing anti-semitism. Faculty members Lori and Sydney will craft study units to accompany the play. The aspiration is to have informative and inspiring interaction between professional theatre artists and student theatre artists through performances in the schools and follow-up talkbacks on the life and leadership of Dr. Korczak.
