There are over 4,500 children in the Central Okanagan that live in a food insecure home and are at risk of going to school hungry. Since 2009, Food for Thought aims to eliminate hunger in children, one child at a time in the Central Okanagan by providing free breakfast to over 1500 school-aged children a day in 30 schools located in Kelowna, Lake Country and West Kelowna. Breakfast typically consists of fruit, dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt), and a grain (toast, bagel, muffin, oatmeal).
Breakfast is important for healthy brain development, academic performance, health, and nutrition. Most importantly, establishing healthy habits, such as eating a nutritious breakfast, at a young age results in healthy habits throughout one’s life.
We know that a hungry child is more likely to act out and less likely to achieve their personal potential. By ensuring children begin their day with a nutritious breakfast, we have seen happy productive classrooms with reduced behavioral problems, increased academic performance and a stronger sense of community.
Food for Thought is alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically on Goal #2 - to end hunger, achieve food security, and improve nutrition and takes action on the determinants health of: (1) Personal Health Practices; (2) Healthy Child Development; and indirectly on (3) Education and Literacy.
A donation of $5000 will sponsor an entire school for an entire year.
