Our Mission

To build a strong, sustainable and more connected community by promoting educational, cultural and social programs for the diverse Montreal community.

About Atwater Library and Computer Centre

The Atwater Library and Computer Centre operates a vibrant community hub for Montreal-area learning and cultural activities, attracting over 100,000 user visits a year.

Unlike public libraries, we receive little government funding for operations (only 11% of our lean budget). We depend on volunteers and private donors to run our many community programs and to maintain our beautiful heritage building.

We welcome everyone and are pleased to serve a great diversity, including many with disadvantages. Our clients include:

- young people creating digital media and developing leadership skills

- new arrivals to Canada using the Internet

- job seekers and seniors taking computer courses

- adults borrowing books and DVDs

- groups attending lectures, discussions, poetry readings and concerts

- people with memory loss and their loved ones getting together at our Alzheimer Café

- community and cultural groups renting our rooms.

What People Are Saying

"This is my home away from home."

— Longtime supporter and member

"This library is the essence of what I believe an urban library should be today, combining old and new ways of sharing books and cultural riches so that a person can study, write and connect through text and personal contact."

— Kathleen Winter, author of the award-winning novel Annabel, 2009

"To the staff, as well as the volunteers I have met. I sincerely thank you for allowing me to live again. This stage proved to me that if a human can open a door, and feel alive again, then any obstacle can be erased. From a grateful lady."

— Stagiaire coping with mental illness

"Come rain, shine, sleet or snow, I’d never miss my three-hour volunteer stint at the Atwater Library’s front desk. Such a treat! The building is magnificent, an architectural treasure. The Library hosts an eclectic clientele whose broad range of interests never fail to surprise and stimulate me."

— Mary Rivard-David

"The Digital Literacy Project has allowed us to empower our youth with concrete and exciting media skills. We look forward to continuing our partnership with this fabulous project!"

— Jocelyn Porter, Sense Project Coordinator, Head and Hands
