Our Mission

Centre Solaris mission is to promote active and healthy life among under-privileged kids from families with low income, to provide relief of poverty by supplying food and other basic supplies to persons of low income, to render assistance to the low income unemployed to find jobs and self-employment, and to assist senior citizens with activity programs and affordable residences.

Our Programs

A. Sports and Recreational Activities

It is estimated that 1 in 3 Canadian families cannot afford to enroll their children in sport or recreation activities (Vision Critical, 2011). Further, only about 5% of kids are meeting the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for Children and Youth. This percentage is even lower among kids from low-income families. To crown it all, current estimates show that more than 22.6% of children aged 2 to 17 from Quebec are overweight or obese.

Centre Solaris has partners with various sports organizations, such as Apex Martial Arts, and developed several programs to allow kids from low-income families to attend sports summer camps and sports and recreational activities throughout the year for free.

Centre Solaris is a proud partner of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities program that gives children from low income families to participate in various sports and recreational activities throughout Canada.

B. Sports Summer Camps

The camp program is designed to strongly encourage participants to continue sports and life-long active lifestyle. We promote this through sports, life-skills and nutrition. Here are some of the daily activities we will do with the children at camp:

Sports: Every day starts with an hour-long martial arts class, followed byyoga, team sports and outdoor activities.

Life Skills: Afternoons are filled with activities to build life-skills and core values. These include swimming lessons, painting classes, and critical thinking exercises.

Nutrition: Not only do we provide nutritious home-cooked meals, we also educate the campers on healthy eating through experience with our on-site organic strawberry farm, trips to local markets and evenan educational excursionto a chocolate factory.

C. Food Baskets

Centre Solaris has an ongoing food basket program targeting residents of Montreal who receive last resort financial assistance (welfare payments) from the Government of Quebec. Food donations are solicited from food stores and food producers. In addition, cash donations are solicited from corporate donors in order to supply food basket recipients with additional items, for example, gift certificate for grocery stores where recipients can purchase any foods, which are not obtained through donations.

The food baskets program provides food baskets on major Canadian and Quebec holidays, Christmas being the primary time period. Other food basket time periods include Thanksgiving Day, Canada Day, St. Jean Baptiste Day, Labor Day, and New Year’s Eve.
