For almost 40 years, the Independent Living Resource Centre Calgary (ILRCC) has provided essential support and resources to people with disabilities. Our center has been a beacon of community, empowerment, and hope for people seeking independence, skill-building, and social connection. Now, we need your help to secure a new, permanent facility—a place where we can expand our offerings and create a fully accessible, welcoming environment for our entire community.
ILRCC: A Vital Resource for Calgary’s Disability Community
Founded in 1985 by passionate volunteers, ILRCC has grown from a small peer support group into a recognized leader in disability services. Our programs are designed to foster independence and choice, and we have become a trusted source of referrals, workshops, youth mentorship, peer support, and social opportunities for people with disabilities. Here’s what members of our community have to say about ILRCC:
“Independent Living Resource Centre is such a valuable resource… The staff went over and above to make things happen for me. They kept me informed on all the procedures and put my mind at ease.” – Carol M.
“I loved the cooking classes and American Sign Language classes… All the staff are very friendly, and I always feel welcomed. I would highly recommend ILRCC.” – Tyler C.
“Staff are kind and helpful… My daughter really enjoys the variety of programs and loves that she has input into them. I highly recommend ILRCC!” – Debbie N.
Why We Need a New Facility
Our current rented space has served us well, but it can no longer meet the needs of our growing community. As more people seek out ILRCC for support and connection, we face limitations in both capacity and accessibility. To better serve the people who rely on us, we are planning to purchase a new space and renovate it to create a fully accessible, purpose-built environment.
With a new space, ILRCC will be able to:
Expand Capacity: Our current space limits the number of workshops, courses, and events we can offer. A new space will allow us to add more programs and offer a wider range of services to meet the diverse needs of our community.
Enhance Accessibility: We want a space designed with accessibility in mind from the ground up, ensuring that everyone who walks through our doors feels welcomed, comfortable, and empowered to engage fully.
Create Specialized Areas: Our community has expressed interest in additional resources and spaces, including adaptive fitness areas, accessible technology labs, commercial kitchen and dedicated spaces for peer support and mentorship.
Promote Social Connection: People who come to ILRCC aren’t just looking for support; they’re looking for community. A new, larger facility will provide more opportunities for social connection, community gatherings, and skill-sharing, creating a hub where people can connect and grow.
How You Can Help ILRCC Realize This Vision
Your support will help make this vision a reality. With the funds raised, we will be able to purchase a suitable space and renovate it to meet our community’s unique needs. Every contribution brings us closer to creating a safe, supportive, and fully equipped community space for people with disabilities and their families.
Your donation will help us to:
- Secure a property that can serve as a permanent home for ILRCC,
- Carry out essential renovations to ensure full accessibility,
- Create adaptive spaces, such as a commercial kitchen, tailored to a wide range of abilities, and
- Build a welcoming environment where people can develop their skills, find community, and build lasting independence.
