Support for African Refugees stranded in Toronto

Embracing compassion and solidarity, we invite you to join us in making a meaningful impact on the lives of African refugees and asylum seekers stranded in Toronto.

Currently, refugee claimants and asylum seekers are stranded and sleeping on the sidewalk outside of 129 Peter Street, a City of Toronto building that refers unhoused people into shelter space. Advocates have stepped in to transport some of the African asylum seekers to various churches in North York but most of the Asylum seekers still prefer to camp outside because of concerns of overpopulation in churches and issues of hygiene and sanitation.

The City of Toronto has been turning away refugees and asylum seekers from its at-capacity shelter since June, referring them to federal programs saying they need more money from the Federal government to accommodate the influx of refugees and asylum seekers. This situation has left over 200 refugee claimants and asylum seekers stranded with no place to call home.

As we witness the struggles and hardships faced by displaced individuals and continue to wait on the Federal government proposed funding to support refugees and asylum seekers, it has become evident that as community members we need to step up and support these individuals who are going through a difficult situation.
