Please join us for Kitchener Waterloo Humane Society’s 2nd Annual Homeward Bound - An Evening for the Animals event. Funds raised from this fun evening support the pets in our care.

Hear Steve and Derek tell the incredible story of Esther-the-Wonder-Pig and how she led them to purchase Canada’s first large-sized animal CT Scanner and gain the support they now provide to animals at their sanctuary farm in Campbellville, ON.

The summer of 2012 was a life-changing time for Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter.

When a friend could no longer look after their 4-week old “teacup” piglet, they asked animal-loving Derek Walter to take her in.

Derek, knowing Steve may not be too happy to add to their myriad of pets, agreed to take the adorable little piglet anyway. Little did either know how Esther would change their lives forever.

Over the next three years, as they discovered there was no such thing as a “teacup” pig, little Esther grew to an enormous 650 pound, full-sized commercial pig. Alongside numerous dogs, cats and a few rabbits, crammed under the roof of a 1,000-square-foot bungalow, Derek and Steve knew they had no choice but to move to a larger space. In 2014, thanks to a bit of luck and some generous donors, Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary was born.
