Equine Therapy Campaign

Finding a therapist for a L’Arche Cape Breton Core Member is nearly impossible. Most therapists and counselors in Nova Scotia lack the specialized training to support people with intellectual disabilities, leaving our Core Members without access to necessary mental health services. They, like all of us, have experienced traumas and have unresolved feelings but are left without the support they need.At L’Arche Cape Breton, we believe in inclusion and strive to create a world where everyone belongs. To achieve this, we must be innovative. In 2022, we launched a pilot project allowing some Core Members to regularly visit Reaching Strides Equestrian Centre in Port Hood for Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). EAL offers numerous benefits: improved muscular control and coordination, sensory stimulation, enhanced self-esteem, stress reduction, and opportunities to practice patience and emotional regulation. Horses, with their non-judgmental nature, provide invaluable support to our Core Members. For Heather MacInnis, a Core Member from Thomas House, EAL has been transformative. Heather, who grew up with horses in Hays River, has rekindled her special bond with them through these sessions. When she returns from EAL, her housemates see her beaming with joy. “It’s nice to spend time with all these beautiful horses, especially Spongey,” Heather shares. Each individual EAL session costs $65 for Heather and nine other Core Members. We need your help to continue making a difference in their lives. Can you sponsor an EAL session to support Heather and her friends?
