Being the only professional francophone theatre company in Alberta, L’UniThéâtre’s mandate is to contribute to the development of the francophone community and to the promotion of the French language and French-language cultural expressions in Edmonton, Alberta and throughout Canada through activities related to the theatrical art form, including professional theatre, community theatre, theatre for young audiences, special events, as well as training and development activities.
L’UniThéâtre was formed in 1992 with the merger of the Théâtre français d’Edmonton (founded in 1968) and the Boîte à popicos (1977). L'UniThéâtre produces and presents contemporary plays for theatregoers of all ages, throughout the province of Alberta. L’UniThéâtre presents 3-4 professional productions a year including a theatre for young audiences tour that is performed in schools across Alberta and British-Columbia in French and French Immersion elementary schools. It also presents, every two years, a large-scale community production. A newly-added feature to its seasons is the À VOIX HAUTE reading series, as well as its new programming initiative for the very young (ages 2 to 5) called "Fabula-Fabulis", which is a series of interactive tales. As well, every spring, students from 12 French and French Immersion Junior and High schools are gathered for a 4 day drama festival (Festival théâtre jeunesse de l'Alberta) during which students present and attend plays produced by their peers and participate in theatre-related workshops offered by professionals.
