Famine in East Africa

In South Sudan, MCC is working with partners to expand access to treatment for acute malnutrition in conflict-affected areas in Unity State. The focus will be on acute malnutrition screening and treatment for over 12,000 children under five, and for pregnant and nursing women.

In Somalia, MCC is working with World Concern to reduce malnutrition among 5,112 children and pregnant and lactating women through training in nutrition, infant feeding practices, and sanitation and hygiene. Levels of acute malnutrition have increased in this area due to drought; since 2015, the rate of acute malnutrition increased from 12.8% to 18.9%.

In Ethiopia, MCC is working with a partner to provide emergency clean and safe drinking water for 1,540 drought-affected pastoralist households in three kebeles in Afar.

In Kenya, MCC is providing food assistance to drought-affected households.

In Uganda, MCC is working with partners to improve long-term food security in northeastern Uganda through two projects that support savings and loans organizations and conservation agriculture training for farmers.
