Dear Friends and Supporters,
As you may be aware, there have been severe reductions of available charitable funds recently across Ontario. MJKO is feeling the negative impacts daily. In fact, this year, for the first time, we have had to temporarily reduce our programs in three inner city schools and we will have to lay off valuable team members late August due to funding shortfalls. This is the reason we need your help – we want to keep our amazing staff employed and doing the work they are best at: using non-contact boxing as a tool to help children and youth overcome their challenges and thrive in our community.
The good news is that we have been offered an amazing time sensitive opportunity to raise our 2019 shortfall of $40,000. The Halsall Family Foundation has agreed to match any funds donated up until September 3, 2019 to a maximum of $20,000.
Ibrahim and I are so proud of all that MJKO has accomplished since our establishment in 2010. With the help of so many volunteers, donors, and our Board of Directors, we have been able to provide:
- A safe space, that provides fresh and healthy food, six days a week in South Parkdale;
- An innovative approach to youth mental health, using the sport of non-contact boxing as a tool for coping with mental health related challenges such as aggression, trauma, anxiety, stress, depression, grief, and suicidal thoughts;
- An environment of trust, belonging with a healthy culture of inclusion, love and success for all;
- Nurturing relationships, mentorship and paid youth employment opportunities.
As former competitive boxers, we know firsthand how much sport can positively impact a person’s life. Over the years, we have refined MJKO’s programs to ensure that youth ages 6-18 are empowered to develop an appreciation for physical fitness, inclusive communities, mindfulness, healthy eating and volunteerism.
For us to continue to provide free access to physical and mental health training through non-contact boxing 6 days a week - we need your help. Your support will help fund MJKO programs, secure our core team of certified coaches, facilities and insurance costs.
If you can help, I am asking you to join MJKO’s Anchor Support Team which will allow MJKO students to always have the support they have come to rely on. This team of generous individuals will consist of:
- 22 people who will commit to giving $25 per month
- 15 people who will commit to giving $50 per month
- 4 people who will commit to giving $100 per month
Consider becoming an Anchor Support Team member by joining one of the above categories.
One time donations are always appreciated and accepted, but I am asking you to seriously consider joining our Anchor Support Team as it makes planning and budgeting possible.
MJKO is an Ontario Registered Charity 84549 4319 RR0001 and you may cancel monthly support at any time. All donations are tax deductible. We have a responsible volunteer Board overseeing our programs and resources. Each year our books are reviewed by DJB Chartered Professional Accountants adhering to the Canadian accounting standards for not for profit organizations. Our first concerns are for the needs of our participants.
I encourage you to reach out to our team with any questions about the Anchor Support Team, or any of MJKO’s operations. For more information about us, please visit our website: MJKO.ca
