The Nanaimo Unique Kids Organization (NUKO) operates two learning centres. The first centre, located in Nanaimo, has been in operation since 2005. The second centre, the Comox Valley Learning Centre (CVLC) opened its doors in September 2014. Both centres offer programs that support children and youth with neuro-developmental disorders. NUKO's mandate is to provide educational services and social support to students whose disabilities act as barriers to success within the conventional school system. NUKO’s high staff to student ratio allows us to implement programs and activities specifically tailored to meet the individual needs of every child. This facilitates the development of essential knowledge and skills that our students require to thrive and become active and productive members of their community.
About NUKO Comox Valley Learning Centre
NUKO students are challenged by a variety of neuro-developmental disorders (including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) that result in a range of socially difficult behaviours (like Acute Anxiety, OCD, and ADHD) that impede their success in conventional learning environments. In order to overcome these barriers, the students must continually work on developing the skills needed to function effectively within a social community.
NUKO Programs provide opportunities for children and youth to develop these skills, and provides the support they need to have successful and positive experiences. Through the academic Learning Centres and Summer Camp Programs, NUKO provides year round support and services to unique kids and their families.
